Review: Want to Know a Secret?

Want to Know a Secret? is a compulsively readable suburban thriller that feels like Desperate Housewives with extra darkness and suspense. Freida McFadden drops you into a picture-perfect neighborhood where every house hides something, and no one is as innocent as they appear.
We follow April Masterson, a YouTube baker with a seemingly perfect life—successful channel, devoted husband, sweet son, and a curated suburban existence. When she starts receiving anonymous text messages threatening to expose her secrets, the façade begins to crack. From there, the story spirals into affairs, manipulation, and murder, all set against PTA meetings, book clubs, and carefully manicured lawns.
What really worked for me was how layered and morally gray every character is. April’s obsessive need to please and her perfectly polished online persona immediately feel just a bit “off.” Julie, the hyper-controlling PTA president and former lawyer, is both intimidating and fascinating. Even the charming new neighbors bring their own tension. McFadden is brilliant at keeping the reader on the fence—you’re constantly re-evaluating who to trust and who to fear.
The pacing is tight, with twists dropped in at just the right moments to keep you turning pages. I loved how the book plays with perception: it shows how, when you’re given only one narrative, you can easily become blind to anything else. The real truth lives in the quiet details—the body language, the small lies, the things people do when they think no one is watching. That balance between what’s said and what’s shown is one of the book’s biggest strengths.
There’s also a sly, dark humor that cuts through the tension. Side characters like Carrie, who jokes about bringing “the heart of the babysitter on a stick” to book club, add just the right amount of comic relief without undercutting the suspense. Nobody here is purely good, but they all feel real—flawed, insecure, petty, scared, and sometimes dangerously driven.
Overall, this was a gripping, layered, and wildly entertaining thriller with strong suburban drama meets psychological suspense energy. If you like unreliable narrators, twisty neighborhood secrets, and books that keep you guessing until the last page, this one absolutely delivers.
