Review: Dungeon Crawler Carl
Dungeon Crawler Carl by Matt DinnimanMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
This book was a ridiculous read that grasped me right away. The characters are unbelievably amazing from every angle—this is just the type of book that is done right. It’s so different from anything else I’ve read. While it reminded me of Ready Player One, it still completely caught me by surprise. It’s filled with so many hilarious scenes and dialogue, and the connection between Carl and Princess Donut was just out of this world.
The author didn't waste any time at all; the progression of the story was non-stop in the best possible way. This is the type of book that is so extremely dumb at times that it’s iconic. It’s incredibly well-written and interesting, and all the characters we meet are done right from beginning to end. The humor had me gagging out loud several times, and I literally could not put it down. It’s been a long time since a book grabbed me the way this one did, so it’s easily a five-star story for me because I finished it so freaking fast, and I devoured the book way more than I initially thought I would.
Without going into spoilers, the concept of the story was very interesting. It’s a gamification of doomsday served in a highly enjoyable way. I kept turning the pages because I was curious about everything. I love how the author is able to jump straight into the action, keeping it exciting while slowly but steadily letting us into the world without the story feeling too informational. This book blends all my favorite things I enjoy about reading a book. It just did everything right for me.
What I enjoyed a lot is the progression of levelling up and how the characters grow alongside the discoveries they face throughout the dungeon. It’s presented in such a humorous way, but not to the point where it doesn't feel devastating—because it truly is. It’s like dark humor mixed with reality. With all the subtle hints and story arcs put together so well, nothing feels forgotten. You’re just left thinking, "I’m starting the next book right away," because how am I going to wait? I’m so happy that there are eight books total and some of them are pretty thick, so there's a lot of good stuff ahead of me. I’m gonna be devouring these books like they're crack cocaine.
This might be my favorite book of the year so far. It’s hard to compare, especially given the different genres I read, but this is definitely my favorite fantasy/sci-fi book of the year without a doubt. I highly recommend it to everyone—just don't take it too personally, it’s just a fun read! So have fun with it!
